Sizing that actually holds what you own
A useful exercise before you call anyone: walk the garage and carport and write down the footprint of the five largest items. Add shelving depth along at least one wall, usually 16 to 24 inches. Add a clear aisle wide enough to pull the mower out without shuffling everything else. That total is usually a size or two larger than the shed people initially imagined, and it is the difference between a shed you use and a shed you dread opening.

Sizes above are a starting point, not a rule. Ceiling height, door width and where the shelving goes change the usable capacity considerably.
Framing and materials built for storage duty
Storage floors take a beating. We build with treated skids or a treated sill on a stone pad, floor joists sized and spaced to carry rolling loads, and a floor deck that will not flex under a loaded wheelbarrow. Walls get sheathed rather than relying on siding alone, so you can hang heavy items anywhere rather than hunting studs.
For roofing, ribbed steel is our default recommendation for longevity. Where a shed sits close to a shingled home, architectural shingles keep the visual match tidy.
Keeping stored items dry
Moisture ruins more stored property in Kentucky than theft ever will. Three details do most of the work: a pad set above surrounding grade so surface water never pools at the base, a ventilated roof assembly so humid air can escape, and generous roof overhangs that keep rain off the siding and doors. Doors, ramps and access
Door width is the most common afterthought. A 5-foot double door works for hand tools and totes but fights a riding mower with a bagger attached; 6 to 8 feet solves it. Ramps should be gentle enough for a wheelbarrow and anchored so they cannot creep away from the sill. If the shed sits on a slope, we address the approach as part of the pad work rather than propping up a plank later.

How big should my storage shed be?
Bigger than you first think. Measure your largest items, add shelving depth and an aisle, then round up one size. The incremental cost of a couple more feet is small next to the cost of outgrowing it.
Do storage sheds need a floor?
Most residential storage sheds get a wood floor over treated framing on a stone pad. Buildings that store vehicles or heavy equipment usually do better on concrete.
Can you build a shed that matches my neighborhood's requirements?

How do I stop mice and pests getting in?
