Pole Barn Storage Building Guide

Sizing and planning a pole barn storage building for RVs, boats, trailers and inventory in western Kentucky.

Shed and pole barn planning in western Kentucky

Storage buildings are all about clear space and getting things in and out without a three-point turn.

Measure what is going inside

A Class A motorhome, a bass boat on a trailer, a camper with the AC unit on top and a gooseneck trailer all have different height and length demands. Measure the tallest point, add clearance, then add the length of the tongue.

Door sizing

For RVs, 14 feet wide by 14 or 16 feet tall is the common answer. For boats and small campers, 12x12 is usually plenty. Two smaller doors often beat one huge one for daily flexibility.

Turning radius and apron

The building is only as usable as the approach. Plan a stone or concrete apron long and wide enough to line up straight, especially with a trailer. This is the single most common regret we hear.

Floor choice

Stone is fine for parking. Concrete makes sense if you wash vehicles, work under them or want a dust-free surface. A concrete strip in the door bays with stone elsewhere is a good compromise.

Ventilation and pests

Sealed but ventilated is the goal. Ridge and eave venting stops condensation on stored vehicles. Closure strips and tight trim keep birds and rodents out.

Security and power

Lockable overhead doors, exterior LED lighting on a photocell, and a couple of interior circuits for a trickle charger or shop vac cover most needs.

Common questions

What size building do I need for an RV?

Most Class A coaches fit comfortably in a 16x40 bay with a 14x14 door. Bring us your exact dimensions and we will confirm.

Should I add a lean-to?

A lean-to is inexpensive covered space for trailers, mowers and firewood — one of the best value add-ons available.

Can I add insulation later?

Yes, though it is cheaper and neater to plan for it during construction.
